Since silica does not exist as discrete molecules naturally, its amount in water is measurable via compound forms such as silicon dioxide (SiO₂) molecules.  Moreover, owing to the electrical neutrality of SiO₂ molecule, it is categorized into neither cations nor anions. The presence of silica plays a significant role in drinking and industrial water treatment plants particularly in reverse osmosis systems. As a result of presence of silica, membrane gets clogged and consequently its longevity is shortened. Thus, measuring silica indicator is essentially important.
